What is the definition of a Flapper, “A Flapper is a young woman, especially one who, during the 1920s, behaved and dressed in a boldly unconventional manner” (Dictionary.com). Flapper women were a figure in American culture that helped define the “new modern women”. People viewed these women to show themselves as the jazzy, youthful type. The “flapper” term arose from the fashion trend for unfastened rubber galoshes that "flapped" when walking. These women appeared to the public to be young women who broke traditional rules of appearance and behavior. Flappers during this time had as much to do with behavior as it did with the way they dressed. These women were carefree and disregarded the laws during this time. Many women heavily drank, smoked, used slang, drove fast, and would freely take jobs and lovers away from each other. Women would also express themselves through new shocking dance moves like Charleston, the Shimmy, and the Black Bottom. These “flappers’ began to be know as the normal way to dress and act like by the early 1922. The “flapper look” was adopted into mainstream life, bobbed hair, lipstick, and short skirts no longer were the sign of a flapper, just that of a modern fashionable woman.
